NAACP Office in L.A. May Close Down

The Los Angeles regional office of the NAACP may be merged with its counterpart in Dallas as part of an effort to reduce the organization’s $3.8-million debt, a union official said Friday. The official, Sallie Williams of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, said in Baltimore that offices in South Orange, N.J., and St. Louis also would close.

But a National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People official in Los Angeles said no final decision has yet been reached.

“The final decision may be made this weekend, but then again, there may be no decision for a while,” said Frank Berry, the executive assistant at the regional office in Los Angeles.
