Strokes of Genius

“Korean Calligraphy,” an exhibit of the works of 41 Korean and Korean American artists skilled in traditional character writing, will go on display Friday at the Korean Cultural Center.

The work is by members of the Los Angeles-based Korean Calligraphers’ Assn., USA, an international group of more than 80 calligraphers dedicated to preserving their centuries-old art.

Using a variety of writing techniques and both Korean and Chinese characters, the artists have transcribed ancient Korean poems and literature into the flowing, delicate strokes of “grass hand,” the bold, angular characters known as “running hand” and several other styles.

The pieces are done in ink on silk, paper scrolls and boards. Some of the artists also will be displaying traditionally themed ink drawings, embellished with various styles of calligraphy.

Most of the artists in the association’s fifth annual local exhibit are from the Los Angeles area.

There is an opening reception 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Korean Cultural Center, 5505 Wilshire Blvd. Exhibit runs through June 29. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays. Free parking behind the center. Admission is free.
