McDougal Confirms His Grand Jury Date in Whitewater Probe
James B. McDougal, a central figure in the Whitewater affair, confirmed Saturday that he has been subpoenaed to appear before a special grand jury investigating the case and to provide handwriting samples.
“I’ll probably honor the subpoena, under my terms,” McDougal said from his home in Arkadelphia, Ark.
Asked what his terms were, McDougal said: “Constitutional terms. I’ll give them samples if I can do it in public. But, yes, I’ll probably put on a little display of penmanship.”
McDougal, former owner of the now-defunct Madison Guaranty Savings & Loan in Arkansas, was a partner with President Clinton and his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, in the Whitewater real estate development in the 1980s.
Independent counsel Kenneth W. Starr has been investigating whether Madison Guaranty deposits were channeled illegally to keep the real estate development afloat and whether depositor funds were improperly diverted into Clinton’s 1986 campaign for governor of Arkansas.
Both Madison Guaranty and the Whitewater project failed in 1989.
