Hewlett-Packard to Unveil Workstations: The Palo Alto-based computer company today will introduce new graphics workstations that offer up to five times the performance power of its existing high-end computers. The so-called J-class workstations range in price from $33,700 to the low $60,000s, Mark Canepa, general manager of the company’s Workstation Systems Division, said. The price is about the same as an existing top-performance HP system but with functionality of machines that would otherwise cost more than $100,000, he said. The models will roll out between now and the fall quarter. Canepa said the new workstation launch is a direct attack on Mountain View, Calif.-based Sun Microsystems Inc., which dominated the $12.4-billion worldwide workstation market with a 36.2% market share last year, according to Dataquest.
