ORANGE : Wife Boosts Gramm Bid for President

Share

Wendy Lee Gramm, the wife of Texas Sen. Phil Gramm, spoke to Republicans in Orange on Tuesday to promote her husband’s bid for the GOP presidential nomination and to rally opposition to government spending.

“The federal government is the only real threat to our freedom and individual liberties,” Gramm said. “People across the country are learning that, and they are beginning to sound more like folks from Orange County.”

Her husband of 25 years, Gramm said, has fought against big government since he was a congressman in the late 1970s.

“The rest of the country has caught up to what Phil has been saying for years: get rid of deficits and cut federal spending,” Gramm said before a group of about 50 people that included county Treasurer-Tax Collector John M.W. Moorlach.

Gramm, an economics professor at Texas A&M; University, was chairwoman of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission under Presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush.

Gramm said she is traveling across the country to speak on behalf of her husband, who is concentrating on fund raising for the campaign. But she said the frequent trips haven’t become tiring.

“There’s not many people in the world that can help their husbands run for President of the United States,” she said, with a smile.
