Varian Selling Electron Devices Unit: Varian Associates of Palo Alto said merchant banker Leonard Green & Partners agreed to buy Varian’s Electron Devices operation for $200 million in cash and the assumption of certain liabilities. Varian Chairman J. Tracy O’Rourke said the sale will allow the company to concentrate on its faster-growing equipment operations. The Electron Devices unit, which makes microwave tubes for the defense and broadcast industries, had 1994 sales of about $250 million, Varian said. It’s the smallest and oldest of the 47-year-old company’s lines and employs about 1,700 people in five plants around the country. Los Angeles-based Leonard Green & Partners said it will change the name of the unit to Communications & Power Industries.
