A $250-million time-share resort that Walt Disney Co. plans to develop along the Newport Coast won unanimous approval Wednesday from the Orange County Subdivision Committee.

Officials said they will begin applying for the necessary building and coastal permits for Newport Coast Resort, proposed as a hillside community along Pacific Coast Highway above the Pelican Hill Golf Course.

The community, which already has the approval of the Orange County Planning Commission and enjoys support from local officials, would be an Italian Mediterranean-style village of 650 condominiums on 76 acres.

The homes would offer ocean views, and the resort would include restaurants, tennis courts, golf and swimming privileges, overnight camping for children and even gondola rides though canals.

Set to open as early as 1997, the resort would be open to the public as well as owners of the time-share units.
