Countywide : House Panel OKs Full Flood-Control Request

Despite rampant cost-cutting, a House subcommittee has approved the full $70.2 million that county officials requested to continue a project designed to prevent massive flooding in Orange County and elsewhere in Southern California.

The full Appropriations Committee will meet next week to consider legislation to fund the Santa Ana River Flood Control Project.

Both Reps. Ron Packard (R-Carlsbad), a member of the House Appropriations Committee, and Robert K. Dornan (R-Garden Grove), said they were pleased that budget-conscious Republicans deemed the project worthy of full funding. Packard said the subcommittee’s chairman, Rep. John Myers (R-Ind.), scrutinized each request.

All six of the county’s House members lobbied for the project, and several local officials pleaded with the Appropriations Committee in March to continue the federal government’s contributions.

“Even as Republicans in Congress continue to look for areas to reduce government spending, the subcommittee agreed with me that this project is an essential investment,” Dornan said.

The subcommittee approval is an important first step toward securing additional federal funding for the flood-control project. The Appropriations Committee and the full House typically accept the subcommittee’s recommendations.
