Powerboat Racers Shove Off Today in Dana Point
About 35 race boats, many capable of speeds up to 100 m.p.h., will gather in Dana Point today for the second annual Dana Point Challenge Offshore Powerboat Race.
The public may meet the drivers and view the boats, including high-speed Scarab and Cigarette powerboats, on the morning of the race at the Dana Harbor guest docks and launch ramp.
At noon, racers parade down the main channel toward the starting point. The race will begin at 1 p.m.
The race, sanctioned by the American Powerboat Assn., will follow a course that begins off the San Clemente Pier, passes Dana Point and then turns near the Aliso Creek Pier. The boaters must complete the course five times during the event.
Six classes of powerboats will be competing in each race.
Beach-goers can get excellent views of the race from both piers, as well as from the Dana Harbor parks and Doheny, Salt Creek and Capistrano beaches.
