SAN CLEMENTE : Classes on Surfing, Beach Safety Offered
The city’s Marine Safety Division is offering classes on surfing and beach safety for children and adults.
Starting Saturday, an instructional surfing class will be held for adults and children 12 or older.
The program, which offers lessons to both beginning and intermediate surfers, will emphasize ocean safety and will teach students how to select and care for their surfboards. The classes meet on Saturdays from 9 to 11 a.m. for six weeks and cost $55.
“We have a 100% success rate in our surfing class,” said Bill Humphreys, a marine safety lieutenant. “By the end of the class, everyone is standing up on their surfboards.”
In addition, the city will offer a Junior Lifeguard class for children ages 10 to 17 starting June 26. The five-week program is designed to teach children about beach and ocean safety, and includes lessons in ocean swimming, surfing and body boarding.
Before joining the program, participants must pass a 100-yard swimming test offered on June 24 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Ole Hanson Beach Club pool. The $90-class runs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon or from 1 to 4 p.m.
Registration for both classes is at the Marine Safety Headquarters, located on the beach next to the San Clemente Pier. Information: (714) 361-8261.
