President Clinton has apologized to 50 gay elected officials for the behavior of Secret Service officers who put on rubber gloves before admitting the officials to the White House for a meeting last week.

In a letter sent Saturday, Clinton said Secret Service Director Eljay Bowman was taking steps to ensure such an incident did not happen again, spokeswoman Ginny Terzano said late Sunday.

The visitors inferred that the guards were demonstrating their fear of the AIDS virus, even though the disease is not communicable through casual contact.

District of Columbia police said 24,000 people celebrated the end of Gay Pride Week on Sunday in Washington, many wearing plastic gloves as a protest.
