HOME LINKS: Head pro Jon Fiedler of Camarillo’s Las Posas Country Club remembers working on putting with a kid named Corey Pavin 15 years ago. . . . Fiedler never thought the Oxnard boy would go on to win the U.S. Open; Pavin’s drives were too short. . . . But Monday, Fiedler was celebrating the victory with anyone who stopped by the club where the champion returns every August for a charity tournament. . . . “Obviously, we’re all prejudiced about it, but it’s the best tournament we’ve seen on TV,” Fiedler said.

DISASTER PREVENTION: The county’s Office of Adult and Children’s Protective Services works to prevent violence such as Sunday’s shooting in Simi Valley (B4). . . . This year, reports of suspected child abuse have zoomed up. “It’s really a surprise to us,” said Sally Allen, program manager for the office. . . . Allen can’t explain the increase, which doesn’t even show up on records yet. . . . Usually, the office gets about 6,500 reports a year. Only 5% of those require intervention.

WOODS WORK: Luke Connaughton, 19, and Melody Bounsall, 18, are two Ojai youths working in Los Padres National Forest for Concerned Resource and Environmental Workers (B1). . . . CREW, a nonprofit agency, shows 14- to 21-year-olds the value of outdoor labor. . . . “CREW taught my boys good work habits,” said Donna Popular of Ojai, whose two sons spent four years in the program. “It provided guidance for them at a critical age.”

‘CANES CATCHER: Former Moorpark College and Simi Valley High catcher Kevin Nykoluk has signed a letter of intent to play for the Miami Hurricanes next season. . . . After spending a season at Moorpark, he transferred to Seminole Junior College last year. . . . He batted .389 with six home runs and 50 runs batted in, but was not selected in the amateur draft. . . . “This definitely takes the sting out,” Nykoluk said. “They go to the College World Series almost every year.”
