CHRISTIAN POP

It is unfortunate that reader Sarah Lawrence (June 11) has to attack a group of artists just because of a metaphor used in the June 4 piece on Steven Curtis Chapman, in which Chris Willman stated that Chapman was like “Bryan Adams with religious values.”
Lawrence responded by suggesting that Christian recording artists “employ piety as a marketing strategy.” Since when is it popular with the world to be a Christian? No one in their right mind would rely upon their Christianity as a “marketing strategy.” Christians are an entity that the secular world, and especially the entertainment industry, would rather sweep underneath the carpet.
Out of all the Christian artists out there, there are maybe three or four besides Chapman with record sales in the millions (e.g. Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, D.C. Talk, Petra). Christian artists do what they do to spread a message of hope to the world. While they are only human, they are also sincere in what they do. They could find easier ways of becoming popular.
