UCI Clinic Scandal No ‘Fertilitygate’

Share

* The “scandal” at the UCI fertility clinic is the lead piece on the front page of this morning’s Times (June 15) as it has been off and on for the past several weeks. Certainly the story is news but “Fertilitygate” it isn’t.

If it is true that the UCI doctors implanted some other woman’s eggs in a patient who, despite the arduous medical regimen was unable to produce her own eggs, then I suppose we have to agree that what they did was wrong.

But missing in all the news coverage is the underlying fact that this wrongful conduct by the UCI doctors enabled families to have babies they desperately wanted. This wrongful conduct created joy and love and happiness in a world in which these commodities are in short supply. Is this a heinous crime?
