California Builders Dominate Gold Nugget Competition
Southern California home builders and architects returned to dominance in the 1995 Gold Nugget design competition, winning 25 of 39 Grand Awards at the Pacific Coast Builders Conference (PCBC) & Remodelers Show, the annual gathering of developers and allied professionals from the 14 Western states and Pacific Rim countries.
Southland builders traditionally have been the biggest winners in the contest, but they won only 16 of 37 grand awards last year and 22 awards in 1993.
The design competition was the high point of the 37th PCBC, one of the largest building industry conventions in the country, which ended Saturday at the Moscone Convention Center here.
The Gold Nugget Awards honor achievement in architecture and land-use planning for residential, commercial and industrial projects. This year’s contest drew nearly 500 entries, with winners coming from Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Nevada, Washington, Wyoming, Australia, Canada, Indonesia, Mexico and Thailand.
Multiple winners included the architecture firm of McLarand, Vasquez & Partners of Costa Mesa, with six Gold Nuggets for residential design and site planning, and Taylor Woodrow Homes and Scheurer Architects, with three awards for condo or attached-home design and site planning at their Altezza development at Newport Coast.
Notable among three Special Awards of Excellence was Pod-Tel, an emergency modular housing unit for displaced victims of natural disasters. The units are designed to be affordable, reusable, able to stand individually or be grouped together and hooked to existing utilities or work as self-contained modules. Pod-Tel was designed by B 3 Architects + Planners/Berkus Design Studio, Santa Barbara.
