Late Opening at Tuolumne Lodge
Tioga Road, the only east-west road across the Sierra in Yosemite National Park, is still closed and Tuolumne Meadows Lodge will not open before July 7, if then, according to the concessionaire.
Clearing of Tioga Road, usually snow-free by Memorial Day weekend, was halted June 13 when an avalanche killed a park service employee who was plowing just east of Olmstead Point.
People who had reservations at the lodge’s 61 tent cabins for the first week in July got phone calls about a week ago telling them to make new plans. (The lodge usually opens mid-June.) Those who lost out will not get any special preference because the lodge is booked for the season, said a spokesman for Yosemite Concession Services Corp.
It will take two weeks for the park’s concessionaire to open facilities at Tuolumne Meadows once Tioga Road is clear.
The campgrounds in Tuolumne Meadows may not open until mid-August, a Park Service spokeswoman said, and then it will be on a first-come first-served basis with no reservations.
