MORE FRILLS: Valley weddings are more elaborate this year, in part because of an upturn in the economy and continuing earthquake recovery, said wedding consultant Jennifer Lee. But forget borrowed or blue. Couples are looking for individuality . . . like Mickey Mouse ears at the reception or Renaissance gowns. In a time when everyone wants to be famous, couples “want to be remembered for creating a beautiful event,” Lee said.

LET ‘EM EAT: Burbank wedding consultant Vicki Giannone says couples are getting choosy about food served at the reception, opting now for more healthful menu choices, like grilled chicken. . . . But there is also incongruity: They’re balancing out dinner with the most decadent chocolate desserts. They eat healthfully, but get to have their cake, too.

HAMMERS AND LACE: Power tools for the blushing bride? Allison and John Young of Calabasas, above, who were married earlier this month, registered at The Home Depot. Unfortunately, the wedding guests didn’t turn out to be quite as progressive as the newlyweds--the couple received lots of crystal, but no hardware. Allison is still hoping for a late gift of an electric drill. She wants the drill bits that go with it too.

TILL DEATH DO US PART?: It may be more famous for those buried there than married there, but Forest Lawn says staging weddings has long been part of the Glendale memorial park’s activities. Wedding coordinator Michael Philistine says he’s noticed at least one change recently in the myriad weddings he watches annually. “I think probably the biggest change is the color people are using. [They’re] often wearing black.”

BYE-BYE: June can also be the month of partings. Van Nuys paralegal Jolene Dashut, the owner of California Divorce Council, says her business accelerates this month because some want to be divorced by the end of the year for tax purposes. They have to start now because it’s six months before the dissolution is final. “It can mean the difference between a refund or not.”
