SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The economy in Ventura County is diverse enough that there are a variety of job opportunities, but most of them require fairly extensive training, according to Philip Bohan, assistant director of the Job Training Policy Council of Ventura County.

To get the word out about training possibilities, the council has begun to publish a newsletter called “On the Job.”

“It talks to different levels of the work force--employers, potential participants, public officials looking to combine their resources” with the council, Bohan said. “We want to get the word out to employers so they will look to us when they’re looking to hire someone. And we want to let employees know we can get them back in the work force.”

The council is a combined effort by the business, labor, education and government sectors. The federally funded nonprofit organization provides job training and placement for disadvantaged youth and adults and for adults who have lost their jobs because of plant closures or layoffs.

“On the Job” is available at Ventura County schools and city halls, county government offices, community centers and social service agency offices.
