The biggest sporting event in France gets under way Saturday with the 82nd annual running of the Tour de France, the grueling 22-day, 2,259-mile bike race that brings more than 10 million cheering fans to the roadside.
This year 20 teams, with nine competitors each, will be vying for a part of the $2.3-million purse, and the race begins in the streets of Saint Brieuc, in Brittany, broadcast live to a prime-time television audience in France.
The favorite? It has to be Miguel Indurain, the Spaniard who is trying to become the first person to win the Tour de France five years in a row.
