Pac Tel Unit to Cut 500 Jobs: Pacific Telesis Group’s Pacific Bell said it will eliminate about 500 jobs as it restructures the company into three divisions that cater to business, consumer and industry markets. About 400 management jobs will be cut in the restructuring that begins July 15, counting toward the company’s previously announced goal of eliminating about 10,000 jobs by 1997. Pacific Bell said it will offer temporary enhanced severance programs to qualified managers and also allow eligible longer-service managers to take a leave of absence of up to two years. Other employees will be offered early retirement, job reassignment or severance benefits. Pac Tel’s stock rose 25 cents to close at $27.50 on the New York Stock Exchange.
