UCLA : Program to Aid Learning-Disabled Parents

Share

A UCLA program will be launched next month to help parents who have learning limitations keep their children healthy and safe.

The $1.5-million program, designed by the university’s Neuropsychiatric Institute, will show these parents how to identify their children’s health problems early so they can decide whether to provide care themselves or seek medical help.

The program will give instruction in health care and safety to as many as 400 families in the Los Angeles and Sacramento areas over a four-year period.

UCLA will work with hospitals, clinics, child protective and social service agencies as well as groups serving people with developmental disabilities to identify parents who are eligible for the program. Services will be free.

The parent education phase of the program will last six months. Then follow-up visits to mothers and children will be made every six months.

The private California Wellness Foundation is funding the project with $810,000. The balance will be paid by UCLA and by donations of time and office space from public agencies.
