Louisiana Gov. Edwin W. Edwards on Wednesday vetoed a bill that would have allowed most state residents to carry concealed guns.

“Every now and then I rise up and do what I know is right,” said Edwards, an avid hunter and gun collector who came to believe in handgun control after a Japanese exchange student was shot to death by a Baton Rouge homeowner three years ago.

Proponents touted the bill as potential salvation for residents faced with escalating crime problems, while opponents charged a gunslinger, wild-West mentality would ensue and exacerbate the problem.
