Radius Employs IBM to Build Macintosh Clones

Radius Inc., which makes visual computing products, said Wednesday that International Business Machines Corp. has agreed to manufacture the company’s products at IBM’s Charlotte, N.C., plant.

Radius is among a handful of companies that have licensed the Macintosh operating system from Apple Computer Inc. to build the first Macintosh computer clones.

The agreement is a key component in Radius’ plan to develop a complete infrastructure to support its Macintosh-compatible operating systems business, it said.

Financial details were not disclosed.

The Sunnyvale-based company said production of Radius-designed and -branded systems at the IBM plant will begin immediately.

The deal also calls for IBM to make use of its global distribution network to deliver complete systems to Radius’ distributors.

Radius delivers Mac OS-based systems, digital video, Super Resolution graphics cards and displays for Mac OS- and Windows-based systems, as well as hard copy products to the publishing, graphics, video and education markets.

Radius shares rose $1 to $12.25 on the Nasdaq. IBM fell 87.5 cents to $98.75 on the New York Stock Exchange.
