South Bay : Air Show Group Says It Will Relocate

Leaders of the Torrance Air Fair say they are flying the coop after getting the cold shoulder from hometown officials.

The Torrance Air Fair Assn. concluded that it would be wasting its time staging an autumn show at the city airport in light of a recent city recommendation to forbid aerobatic stunts and parachute jumps, said Jim Gates, the group’s president. Only flyovers and ground-based displays were to be allowed, city officials say.

Aerial stunts performed at last year’s show sparked concern at City Hall, where officials questioned if the stunts met the spirit of their agreement with air show organizers.

“They were very dramatic, very elaborate and not comfortable from a city standpoint,” said City Manager LeRoy J. Jackson, who expressed concern about city liability and resident safety.

Now Torrance air aficionados say they have found friendlier skies to ply their skills in.

They will turn their energies to helping another city air show get off the ground Aug. 18-20--in neighboring Hawthorne.
