It’s every parent’s Fourth of July nightmare.

Smitty Harris, 45, of Stanton was driving home Tuesday evening with his family from an Independence Day celebration when he heard a loud noise and pulled off the 605 Freeway in Cerritos to see if something had hit his car, officials said.

Harris found a shattered window and blood on his 4-year-old son’s face and neck. He rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors discovered that the child had been wounded in the neck by a small-caliber bullet, said Sheriff’s Lt. J. Carlson. The boy was reported in satisfactory condition Wednesday.

Carlson said it was unclear whether the bullet was fired from a passing car or if it was a celebratory salvo fired by a Fourth of July reveler.
