Doctors removed a blood clot from the brain of Vice President Al Gore’s mother on Wednesday. The apparently successful operation followed a mild stroke she suffered less than 24 hours after having a heart attack.

Gore flew from Washington to be with his 82-year-old mother, Pauline. She was in stable but critical condition after about four hours of surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

“If nothing else happens she stands an excellent chance of making a functional recovery,” said Dr. George Allen.

The family was allowed to visit her after the operation.
