It Looks as if Nomo Might Really Have a Future in Baseball

Share

It’s the year 2009, 14 years after he won rookie of the year, the Cy Young, led the Dodgers to the World Series and stunned the baseball world.

Hideo Nomo is on the mound, now with his fifth team, sporting a good sized paunch and a Fu Manchu mustache.

He is about to get a win for a team seriously lacking in attendance and that is using him to reach out to the Japanese community.

Nomomania is alive and well in San Diego.

The Dodgers should remember that P.R. stands for pennant race and not public relations. They should have used their day off Monday to change the rotation and have Hideo Nomo pitch Tuesday and Sunday, maybe getting him two extra starts over the course of the season, rather than set him up to pitch in the All-Star game. It could make the difference between winning the West title and watching the playoffs on TV.

So Jose (E-6) Offerman made the All-Star team instead of Eric (RBI) Karros. What a shame, but like National League Manager Felipe Alou said in explaining the number of representatives from Los Angeles: “Four Dodgers and Nomo.”

That Jose Offerman was booed when announced as an all-star at Dodger Stadium shouldn’t surprise anyone. What Dodger fans booed was not Jose’s inconsistent play at shortstop over the years or even the inexcusable mental errors that leave us shaking our heads game after game. What Dodger fans were booing was the lackadaisical attitude, divisiveness, immaturity and lack of leadership that handicap a team on the verge of greatness.

Offerman an all-star? That’s way off the mark.

Don’t blame Jose Offerman for not being able to catch Jeff Blauser’s pop-up behind second base. I mean, it would have taken an all-star to make that play!

Evidently, managerial strategy wasn’t part of the curriculum at Lasorda U.
