HELP!: We love you, Ringo, oh yes we do. And hey, hey, we were big Monkees fans--no matter how much people tried to put them down. But we’re rather horrified to see you both together in a pizza commercial. It’s kinda like seeing Leonardo giving a thumbs up to a guy painting black velvet Mona Lisas.

In case you’ve missed it, the new Pizza Hut spot has the Ringed One chatting about how he hoped to convince “the lads” to eat pizza crust-first. Ultimately he is joined in the exercise by three others--Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork and Davey Jones--and exclaims “Wrong lads” as the Monkees’ theme plays.

Starr’s attorney Bruce Grakal, who arranged the commercial deal, suggests that offended Beatlemaniacs should lighten up a bit. “It was meant simply to be humorous,” he says. Ringo remains the only Beatle ever to appear in a TV ad (he broke the Beatle barrier when he did a 1987 spot for a wine cooler, shortly before undergoing treatment for alcoholism).

The person who comes out looking best in all this: Michael Nesmith, the one of the Pre-Fab Four who won’t stoop to such Monkee-ing around.
