A thought crosses her mind: Maybe she’ll pay for the marriage license with her Visa card. She might get her money back if things don’t work out.

Five years with Robert and suddenly she’s in a hurry. All it took was a call from her mother, or maybe it was her upcoming 30th birthday. Whatever the case, one night Robert finally said: “OK, what the heck.”

They settled on a small ceremony in an uncle’s garden in Pasadena. Citrus would cater. Robert would wear his gray pinstripe, and she chose her blue linen. No fuss.

Except the morning before, this morning, in fact, she finds herself drawn to a flower shop, ordering dozens of tulips. Glimpsing her reflection in a window, she imagines Audrey Hepburn staring back. Her hairdresser takes her on a moment’s notice. “Something different,” she says. “I want to start new.”

Next thing she knows, she’s looking for a wedding gown, or at least something white. The first one she tries on has a crop top and pouf skirt, like something out of a little girl’s dream. It brings tears to her eyes.
