World IN BRIEF : PAKISTAN : 14 Killed in Ethnic Violence in Karachi

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

At least 14 people were killed and 20 wounded in violence during a three-day strike in the southern port of Karachi, police said. But the city of 12 million people was eerily quiet on the third day of the anti-government strike called by the ethnic Mohajir National Movement to protest the death of a former city councilor while in police custody. The group said in a statement that it had decided to end what was to have been a four-day strike one day early as a goodwill gesture before peace talks with the government due to start in the capital, Islamabad, on Tuesday. This month’s death toll in Pakistan’s largest city now stands at 93.
