OXNARD : Council to Disburse U.S. Shelter Grants

Nearly $98,000 in federal grants will be divvied up among homeless services programs at tonight’s Oxnard City Council meeting.

The city’s Homeless Grants Committee has recommended grants for eight programs, including $20,000 to the Ventura County Public Social Services Agency/American Red Cross to operate the winter homeless shelter at the Oxnard National Guard Armory and $20,000 for the Commission on Human Concerns to establish a homeless outreach center for counseling, information and referral.

The committee has also recommended that Catholic Charities of Oxnard receive $17,000; Ventura County Department of Mental Health/Catholic Charities be given $10,000; the Salvation Army-Ventura Transitional Living Center be granted $9,850 and Food Share, Turning Point Foundation and Rainbow Recovery Centers each receive $7,000.

The city reviewed 12 applications asking for a total of nearly $310,000 from the federal Emergency Shelter Grant Program funds, city officials said. Of Oxnard’s $103,000 allocation, $5,150 will be spent on administrative costs.

The City Council will meet at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 305 W. 3rd St.
