BUENOS AIRES : Change in Cordoba
A new governor takes office Wednesday in the troubled Argentine province of Cordoba, where riots broke out in June over the provincial government’s failure to pay employees for more than two months.
Gov. Eduardo Angeloz, unable to cope with the province’s financial crisis, is resigning five months before the end of his term. His successor, Ramon Mestre, who was elected in May, will be taking office early.
Both Angeloz and Mestre are members of the Radical Party, the opposition to President Carlos Menem’s ruling Peronists. Angeloz has accused Menem’s administration of withholding financial support from Cordoba while favoring Peronist-rule provinces. Menem has denied the accusation.
