Chatsworth : Pastor to Attend School Prayer Hearing

The Rev. Jeff Utter, a United Church of Christ pastor in Chatsworth, will represent the San Fernando Valley Interfaith Council on Monday at a congressional subcommittee hearing in Palms on school prayer.
The House Judiciary Committee’s Constitutional Subcommittee has been holding hearings around the country on a proposed Religious Equality Amendment.
Utter is a vice president of the Chatsworth-based interfaith organization, whose board of directors adopted a statement in May to “strongly oppose any attempt to alter the Constitution or otherwise provide for officially sanctioned prayer in our public schools.”
The statement added: “We urge teachers and students to take advantage of the already existing freedom to pray alone or with groups of like-minded peers on school campuses when schedules permit.”
The 300-word statement was signed by 32 Protestant, Catholic, Jewish and Unitarian clergy and 43 lay men and women.
