An advisory panel to the Food and Drug Administration Friday backed a radical experiment to try to save the life of a dying AIDS patient by giving him a bone marrow transplant from a baboon.

The FDA still must formally approve the experiment, but doctors and researchers in Pennsylvania and California said they hope to have the 37-year-old volunteer undergo the procedure in early September, which his own doctor called a long shot to save him.
