From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Sri Lanka radio said a Tamil rebel truck laden with explosives blew up in the rebel-held north, killing more than 160 people. But the military and a relief agency couldn’t confirm the report. The Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corp. said most of the victims were civilians. Sri Lanka’s state-run national news agency, Lankapuvath, said three rebel trucks with explosives blew up a day earlier in Jaffna, killing 130 people. The reports came three days after the military ended its biggest offensive in eight years.
