* Re “Clinton Hints at Giving FDA Tobacco-Regulation Power,” July 14:
Are we not thrilled to learn that President Clinton and FDA Commissioner David Kessler have at last discovered tobacco? According to my encyclopedia the “nicotiana” plant was discovered by Columbus along with the Western Hemisphere.
My own experience with cigarettes climaxed in 1950 when I decided to stop smoking. I did so because I read in the newspaper that smoking was harmful. On the other hand, my father smoked until the age of 90.
As to giving Kessler and the FDA more power to regulate people’s lives, I say no, we can regulate our own lives.
