South Bay : THE ROMANCE IS OFF
Holly Glen, an upscale community in the north end of Hawthorne, is no longer courting El Segundo.
After a brief romance, Holly Glen leaders have decided to stay with tried-and-true Hawthorne, calling off their efforts to secede from the financially troubled city.
The Holly Glen Homeowners Assn. had tried to woo the neighboring beach city of El Segundo into annexing their community of about 1,100 homes. But the homeowners withdrew the proposal Tuesday night after learning they were likely to face rejection.
“It just didn’t pencil out,” said association President Mark Schoenfeld. “They would be losing money [to annex us], and at this point, we have nothing to entice them with.”
