THOUSAND OAKS : Home Depot Wins OK to Open Earlier

Share

Despite protests of neighbors who say they are tired of early morning truck noise, the Home Depot in Newbury Park won approval from the Thousand Oaks City Council to open an hour earlier in the morning.

The council, in a 4-1 decision, overturned an earlier Planning Commission denial of Home Depot’s request. Councilwoman Elois Zeanah cast the lone dissenting vote.

Managers at the building supply store said they want the 6 a.m. opening--as opposed to 7 a.m--to satisfy the needs of contractors who like to shop early in the morning. They promised no deliveries will be allowed before 7 a.m.

Residents who live near the store have long complained that early morning deliveries disrupt their sleep. They have also complained that managers run trash compactors late at night and that the building is unsightly and poorly kept.

The council’s approval came with a few conditions: The company must add three more feet to a three-foot wall surrounding the property, block off all but one entrance to the building and place an employee at the gate to redirect any truckers who arrive too early for the 7 a.m. delivery opening.

In addition, the council will monitor the situation over the next year and can revoke the change.
