WORLD IN BRIEF : SRI LANKA : Tamil Rebels Resume Attacks in East
- Share via
Tamil rebels resumed their attacks in eastern Sri Lanka after a weeklong lull, killing 10 soldiers in two attacks, the military said in Colombo. Five rebels also were killed in the ambush of a military patrol and an attack on a police commando base, according to the military. Fighting in eastern Sri Lanka died down last week after hundreds of guerrillas moved north to defend their stronghold of Jaffna against a major six-day government offensive. Rebels have been fighting for a homeland for the Tamil minority since 1983. They allege discrimination by the Sinhalese majority, which controls the government and military.
