Guerrillas ambushed an army column in Peru’s eastern jungle region in a clash that killed 36 soldiers and rebels, the military said. The ambush happened near the town of Tingo Maria, 200 miles northeast of Lima, the Defense Ministry said. The military said 16 soldiers were killed and six wounded, and 20 Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) guerrillas were killed. The area where the battle occurred is in the Upper Huallaga Valley in the department of Huanuco, which has been the scene of similar battles recently. The brief military statement on Thursday’s attack said the soldiers had entered an area mined with dynamite and were killed as a result of explosions. It did not give other details.
