MAYWOOD : Hamilton Is Target of Third Recall Effort

Share

Councilwoman Elvira Moreno-Guzman is leading the latest drive to oust longtime City Councilman Bill Hamilton, the target of two similar recall efforts in recent months.

Moreno-Guzman and other residents, who charge that Hamilton no longer represents the city’s best interests, have submitted two petitions since May to City Clerk Sam Pena in an effort to force a recall election against Hamilton. But Pena rejected both documents because recall organizers failed to properly file notices of intent.

Last week, recall proponents said they will try for a third time and will serve Hamilton with a letter of intent by Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

If the latest petition is approved and organizers follow through with the steps to force a recall, a special election could come as soon as December, Pena said.

Hamilton, 74, a councilman for 20 years, dismissed the recall effort as a personal attack by Moreno-Guzman and said he is confident the drive will fail.

A special election would cost the city about $25,000, which would come from a special elections fund the city has already set aside.
