Sony to Consolidate Production: In a restructuring prompted by the strong yen, Sony Corp. is shifting part of its production of electronic components overseas and will move part of the operations of its Tokyo headquarters as well, said Tamotsu Iba, executive deputy president. The computer center for its global in-house operations will be moved from Japan to the United States in 1996, for a savings of as much as $95.4 million a year, Iba said. Production of computer displays and projectors is being halted at its plant in Fujisawa, west of Tokyo, and will be consolidated at its Malaysian plant and a plant in Ichinomiya in central Japan. Sony does not plan to reduce the work forces at the subsidiaries after the consolidations.
