Budget, Tax Cut

Share

* The state Senate’s killing of Gov. Pete Wilson’s tax cut demonstrates once again why the Democrats just don’t get it (July 14). The voters elected Gov. Wilson and a near-majority Republican Assembly because we are tired of the tax and spenders who have controlled Sacramento for so many years. One would think that after the debacle of the ’94 elections, at least some Democrats would have paid attention.

* As in 1992 California is in a state of “budget impasse.” It began a new fiscal year on July 1 without legal spending authority. In contrast to 1992, not all institutions will be as sympathetic to the plight of the state when and if July 31 comes and a budget is still not in place.

I commend the stand of Bank of America (July 13) in stating that it will not amend its lending policies in order to “contribute further to the budget gridlock.” The state should not expect private enterprise to “keep watch while they get their act together.” Everyone understands that success stems from having a plan and carrying out that plan without relying on extraordinary outside help. The state, therefore, should deliver exactly what it expects from its own citizens.
