Donald H. Gard, 72, Professor at Cal State Fullerton, Dies

Donald H. Gard, professor emeritus and founding chair of the religious studies department at Cal State Fullerton, died Tuesday of a heart attack. He was 72.

Gard received his master’s degree and doctorate at Princeton University and taught theology there and at Chapman University and USC.

Gard then joined the Fullerton campus in 1967, where he chaired the religious studies department for 12 years. During his 19-year tenure, he was an administrative assistant to the university’s first president, William B. Langsdorf, served a term as president of the school’s Phi Kappa Phi chapter and received his emeritus status in 1986.

Gard is survived by his wife, Ruth; their four children, Pam Colby, Don, Jerry and James; seven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services are scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Laguna Niguel Presbyterian Church.
