Electrical equipment company AMP Inc. said Thursday that it plans to consolidate three manufacturing operations and cut 490 jobs at its Matrix Science unit in Torrance.

Thea Hocker, a spokeswoman for the company, said that because the move is a consolidation, the company foresees no major future charges.

AMP said it plans to consolidate the operations into existing facilities by Jan. 1. It said the work force reductions will take effect between October and December.

AMP bought Matrix Science in 1988. The unit produces circular connectors used in military, aerospace and other industrial applications.

“We deeply regret the impact of the reduction on our employees and on Torrance,” said August Kastel, vice president of AMP’s aerospace and government systems sector.
