REMEMBERED AT LAST: Korean veterans, their friends and families gathered by the thousands in the nation’s capital for the dedication of a memorial honoring those who fought in “The Forgotten War” (A17). . . . Among them was Venturan Arthur Karma, a fighter pilot who last saw his buddy flying a mile behind him 42 years ago this month. He never knew if he survived the war. . . . So Karma searched the database set up near the memorial and found that his friend had indeed died that July night. “Everybody says it’s the forgotten war, but I wanted to find out what happened,” he said.
WAITING GAME: Children whose parents are fighting it out in Ventura County courts can play downstairs in a brightly painted waiting room, where volunteers lead games, set up the video or offer a cuddle and a good book. . . . All the equipment and games in the room are donated, right down to the juice and graham crackers in the fridge. . . . More donations are always needed. But, said courts officer Florence Prushan: “The thing we need most is people.”
THEY’RE MELTING: As temperatures soared to 100 in some parts of the county Thursday (B1), it was a day that screamed for ice cream. . . . While Madge Cook and Dorothy Glass enjoyed a cone in Oxnard, customers clamored for sherbets and iced cappuccinos at the Creamery on High Street in Moorpark. Said store manager Robby Perez, 16: “It was like, so hot. I just knew we would be busy.” Others headed for pools or rivers and many elderly stayed indoors.
AURA VOIR: You’ve heard a lot about auras over the years--who’s got them and what’s the best color. Now, you can see for yourself. . . . As part of the grand opening festivities at the Heart of Light Bookstore at 451 E. Ojai Ave. in Ojai on Saturday and Sunday, the folks from Santa Barbara-based Aura Visions will take your aura’s picture for $20. . . . “We thought it would be a kick and it ties in with the theme of our bookstore,” said spokeswoman Lynn Taylor.
