WORLD IN BRIEF : BURUNDI : Thousands Flee Battle Near Capital
From Times Wire Services
Thousands of civilians fled renewed fighting in a Hutu suburb of Bujumbura, Burundi’s capital. Witnesses said the civilians, carrying piles of belongings, fled the suburb of Kamenge when troops of the Tutsi-dominated army and Hutu gunmen clashed using automatic weapons and grenades. Hatred between Burundi’s Tutsis and Hutus has led to as many as 100,000 deaths since the country’s first freely elected Hutu president was killed by renegade Tutsi troops in 1993.
