THE FAMILY HEART: A Memoir of When Our Son Came Out by Robb Forman Dew (Ballantine: $11; 229 pp.). The idyllic life of American Book Award-winning novelist Robb Dew was dramatically altered when her older son revealed he was gay. His announcement led Dew and her husband to examine their own beliefs: Although sexuality is only one factor in a personality, it suddenly seemed the key to their son’s every word and action. Dew grew increasingly angry as she realized his homosexuality might cause people to limit or harm her child. By including moments of anger and frustration as well as understanding and laughter, Dew draws an affectionate portrait of a supportive family.
