SOUTH GATE : Vacant Fire Station Put Back on Market

Share

The City Council has aborted its negotiations to sell a long-vacant fire station to St. Francis Medical Center.

City officials placed Fire Station 52--which has been vacant for a decade and has been the cause of much political dispute--on the market again with a $132,000 price tag.

St. Francis Medical Center had offered to buy the building in January for $80,000, but the council deadlocked 2 to 2 on the offer, which some council members argued was too low.

The city took down the “For Sale” sign pending appraisal of the property, which is on State Street near Firestone Boulevard.

With Councilman Henry C. Gonzalez dissenting, the council recently approved reimbursing about $16,300 to St. Francis for work the hospital had done on the property when it believed the sale would go through.

The work consisted mostly of removing underground fuel storage tanks.

At one time, some council members had suggested converting the station into a youth center, but that idea was scrapped.

“The majority of the council would like to see the property generate revenues,” Mayor Albert Robles said.
