Iranian-backed guerrillas killed an Israeli soldier and wounded two others in an ambush in southern Lebanon on Sunday that provoked retaliatory bombardment, security sources said.

At least 10 Lebanese civilians were also wounded when a shell fired by guerrillas hit the village of Rihan in an Israeli-occupied border enclave, security sources said on condition of anonymity.

An Israeli army statement identified the dead soldier as Sgt. Yosef Weinstock, 19, from Bnei Brak, and said another soldier was injured. There was no immediate word on casualties from the Israeli shelling.

Hezbollah guerrillas raked an Israeli mechanized convoy with missiles and rocket-propelled grenades as it rumbled between the villages of Rihan and Aishiyeh, the sources said.

The area lies in the eastern part of a border enclave Israel has occupied since 1985.
